Big Blue
I have only seen the Pacific Ocean once. It was during a vacation to New Zealand when I was seven. It was June and a blisteringly cold Winter, and we visited a dolphinarium right by the coast. I don’t think it was necessarily the massness of it that enraptured me, but it was the feeling of the same water reaching the other side of the world, to those California roads lined with palm trees,...

The Science of Sleep
I’ve been thinking of experimenting with my sleep pattern lately, mostly so I can balance out my sleep and wake time. A polyphasic sleep pattern seems like the best deal - it consists of several naps throughout the day (e.g. A twenty-minute power nap at the end of every four-hour period). I have three main problems with it though: 1. I take a very long time to fall asleep most nights. By...

N.E.mation →
NEmation is a competition for students in Singapore to “express their notions on Total Defence through animation”. Although the whole After-School-Special feel is a little annoying (plus the videos on the site are pretty low quality), the clips are rather impressive considering they’re done by fifteen year olds with no prior experience in animation. I particularly like Entries...

1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die  →
(via) The current edition of the book (2008) in a handy excel sheet where you can keep track of what you’ve seen so far. *This list dates back all the way to 1902 and has movies from all over the world, so if you have a depressing single digit percentage, it’s probably normal.

Wake up
You know that feeling of falling when you’re sleeping and then being jerked awake immediately? (They’re called hypnic jerks, and apparently your brain makes up the dream of you falling in the same second that the jerk happens - how cool are our brains??) Everyone experiences them, but I wonder if it’s possible to survive a fall in a dream and sleep right through it.

The History of Sarcasm →
I was wondering the other day what the first recorded piece of sarcasm was. This other article is also pretty interesting - apparently if you can’t pick up sarcasm, your parahippocampal gyrus might be damaged. I know tons of people with head injuries then.

Identity
Raise your hand if you wear dark glasses and have lady parts, and have been told by a guy that “you look like Tina Fey”. Not that it isn’t a compliment of the highest sorts, but would you tell a guy who had red hair that he looked like Conan O’Brien?
